The Difference Between Casting, Forging, Stamping and Die-Casting

– Casting is melting the raw materials, let it form naturally in the forming mold. Casting divided into two types: high pressure casting and low pressure casting. (solid-liquid-solid)

– Forging is heat of raw materials to a certain temperature, then use the tools forging forming. Forging is also a way of casting, difference is the forging temperature is lower, metal can ne make the finished product in a semi-molten state. Can refine the grains in the parts. (solid – solid)

– Stamping is in the normal temperature, press forming the raw materials with a suitable stamping die.

– Die casting is also a kind of high temperature casting, it is use of pressure on basis of casting, inject the melted material into the mold, to get a higher density or more precise shape. When processing complex structure and difficult castings, can use a die casting machine, heat the metal into a liquid state, press into the mold, after cooling, open the mold and remove the product.

– Parts thickness is basically the same, suitable for sheet forming, use stamping.

– Parts thickness is large difference, complex shape, not heat, use die-casting.

– Casting can produce complex shapes parts, especially complex inner cavity blank. Casting quality is unstable, many processes, complex influencing factors, prone to many defects.

– By forging can eliminate the defects of metal such as cast condition loose in the process of smelting, optimize microstructure. Because of conserved completed metal flow line, forgings mechanical properties generally better than the same material castings. For the important parts with high load and severe working conditions, except for the plate, profile or welding parts with simple shape, often used forgings.

– Stamping parts compared with castings and forgings, have thin, even, light, strong characteristics. The mold ensures the size and shape accuracy of the stamping parts, and generally do not damage the surface quality of stamping parts, mold life is generally longer, so the stamping stable quality and good interchangeability.

– Casting equipment and molds are expensive, so the die casting process is generally only used to mass production. Especially suitable for manufacturing large quantities of small and medium sized castings. Compared to other casting techniques, die casting surface is smoother, has higher dimensional consistency.
