The Effect of Surface Smoothness to Component Quality

Surface smoothness of a component has effective influence to the quality performance of a mechanical component; the main points are as below:

  1. Affect reliability. Low surface smoothness reduces contact area of components, which will reduce the component reliability.
  1. Affect the stability of fit. The rougher the surface, the more easily it will wear out. The gap gradually increases in the working process which reduces fitting stability.
  1. Affect corrosion resistance. Rough surface is easy to cause surface corrosion by corrosive gas or liquid through the surface of the micro concave valley into the internal metal.
  1. Affect measuring accuracy. The measuring accuracy is directly affected by the surface smoothness of the measured surface, especially for precision measurement device like CMM.
