Types Of Carburizing for CNC Machining

Carburizing is the process infiltrate carbon atoms are into the surface layer of steel. Makes the workpiece of low carbon steel have the surface layer of high carbon steel, after quenching and low temperature tempering, the surface layer of the workpiece has high hardness and wear resistance, ,while the central part of the workpiece still retains the toughness and plasticity of low carbon steel.

According to the different containing carbon medium, carburizing can be divided into gas carburizing, solid carburizing, liquid carburizing and carbonitriding (cyanidation).

Gas carburizing is put the workpiece into the closed carburizing furnace, through the gas carburizing agent (methane, ethane, etc.) or liquid carburizing agent (kerosene or benzene, alcohol, acetone, etc.), decompose activated carbon atoms at high temperature, infiltrate the workpiece surface, in order to obtain a high carbon surface layer.

Solid carburizing is to pack the workpiece and solid carburizing agent (charcoal plus accelerator composition) together in a closed carburizing box, put the box into the heating furnace and heat it to the carburizing temperature, and keep it warm for a certain period of time, to activated carbon atoms infiltrate into the surface workpiece, is one of the earliest carburizing methods.

Liquid carburizing is the use of liquid media carburizing, commonly used liquid carburizing media are: silicon carbide, “603” carburizing agent, etc.

Carbonitriding (cyanidation) is divided into gas carbonitriding, liquid carbonitriding, solid carbonitriding.
