What Is Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a controlled metal-removal process that is used to remove metal by means of electric spark erosion. In this process an electric spark is used as the cutting tool to cut (erode) the workpiece to produce the finished part to the desired shape.

With the development of industrial production and the progress of science and technology, new materials with properties such as high melting point, high hardness, high strength, high brittleness, high viscosity and high purity are constantly emerging, more and more workpieces with various complex structures and special process requirements. EDM can meet the needs of production development, so it has been rapidly developed and widely used.

  • EDM belongs to non – contact machining.

When machining, the tool electrode does not contact with the workpiece material, the macroscopic force between the two is very small.

  • Because EDM directly USES electrical and thermal energy to remove metal materials, It has nothing to do with the strength and hardness of the workpiece, therefore, can used soft tool electrode to process the hard workpiece.
  • Can be processed any difficult to process metal materials and conductive materials.

Because removal of materials in processing is by the electrical and thermal action during discharge. The machinability of the material mainly depends on the electrical and thermal properties of the material, such as melting point, boiling point, specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, resistivity, etc. Almost independent of its mechanical properties (hardness, strength, etc.).

  • Suitable for machining complex surface shape workpiece, such as complex cavity mold, etc.
  • Can process special request parts.

Can process thin wall, elasticity, low stiffness, micro holes, shaped holes, deep holes and other parts with special requirements, can also be processed small text on the mold.
